Welcome (BACK) to Po'Dunk

Hello friends! And welcome to the brand new Backwood Folk website! This is a hub for all of news and background info on my new comic series.A little introduction. Hello, I’m Gustav. I’ve been making comics and webcomics for the last fifteen years or so in the Arkansas Ozarks. Way back in the beginning I did a little webcomic called Backwood Folk about the lives and mysteries swirling around a small fictional rural Arkansas Ozarks community. It was early enough that I was balancing a webcomic schedule with school work. Funny to think about now. After taking a decade excursion to do sci-fi comics in the form of my webcomic, Tourist Unknown, I’m back from outer space. Back to the Ozarks, back to Po’Dunk, and back to Backwood Folk.

This page one retelling follows the return of Benedict Carpenter to his hometown after twelve years in The City. The Po’Dunk he returns is very much the one he remembered, down to the ghost stories that he told himself were a youthful fiction. Can he find his footing in the hills again, does he even want to? Maybe the last twelve years didn’t change much in the Ozarks, but change is coming on his heels. Both the living and the dead will need to prepare.

Backwood Folk will be released in issues as they are completed. The first issue documents the events surrounding Benedict’s return. Like future installments it also explores the history and folktales of the region. Each issue will be released in a deluxe oversized print format as well as much in more affordable digital issues. If I do my job right, each installment should feel like a proper meal.

Our first issue, WAKE UP MOCKINGBIRD, STAY AWHILE will be available shortly! Most likely September 2024. Take a gander of the proof on the left.

In the mean time, have fun and explore the website.

The Backwood Folk website will be a repository for extra info on the world of Po’Dunk and the Ozarks of Backwood Folk. Some of it revealing more layers of the world and some of it just being straight fibs. It’s a world of tall tales.

I’m both excited and completely terrified to start this new journey, but hope y’all catch a ride and enjoy the sights. Till next time.
